De Gea Has Forgotten Madrid

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom: David de Gea returns to his hometown and the club he grew up with early on Thursday morning as Manchester United face Atletico Madrid in a Champions League match that finds the two giants falling apart.

United are fourth in the Premier League, 17 points behind rivals from the same city, Manchester City and already knocked out of both domestic rivals with only success in Europe could end a five-year wait for the trophy.

However this is not the first time in 11 years since the Spanish goalkeeper moved from Madrid to Manchester, De Gea has risen to challenge while playing in a struggling team.

The 31 -year -old has recorded the most saves in the Premier League this season with 96, a sign of his best performance and United’s failure to defend as a team.

His place as the club’s number one goalkeeper is also in danger with Dean Henderson ending his 2020/21 campaign as a Premier League key player.

Despite the disappointment, there were signs of a resurgence for the Red Devils who finished the season in second place behind Manchester City.

The excitement generated by the inclusion of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho added to their hopes of challenging for the title for the first time since Alex Ferguson retired.

On the other hand, he is the only player to win the league from the 2012/13 squad to play at his best with the team.

“Now I feel like I’m from Manchester,” De Gea told this week.

“Your place is loved and welcomed like at home. I’ve been here a long time, obviously anything can happen in life, in the world of football, I honestly don’t see myself coming out of Manchester United.”

Severe criticism in Spain welcoming De Gea’s performance at the 2018 World Cup may have played a significant role.

The last time he played after 45 caps was two years ago.
