RIO DE JANEIRO: Neymar slammed Brazilians who supported Argentina to win the Copa America simply because of their interest in Lionel Messi.

Brazilian fans are said to be less interested in this year’s tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic that hit the country as well as a last-minute venue change that saw Brazil host after Argentina and Colombia withdrew.

SportTV sports journalist from Brazil, Fabiola Andrade was among the fans who openly expressed support for Argentina ahead of the final action, tomorrow morning Malaysian time.

“Before criticizing me, let me explain. I love Brazil… I have some friends from Argentina. However, I am not supporting Argentina in the Copa America final because of them, no.

“I support Argentina because I love football and @leomessi. This player needs to win the championship with his country! For justice !,” he said on his Instagram page.

After Brazil beat Peru 1-0 in the semi-finals, Neymar said he wanted to face Argentina in the final and play against his former Barcelona team-mate Messi.

The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) striker, who missed Brazil’s success in winning the Copa America in 2019 due to injury problems, admitted that he was shocked because there were people in the country who supported Argentina.

“I am a Brazilian and proud to be a citizen of this country. My dream is to be on the Brazilian team and hear the fans cheering. I don’t attack Brazil no matter in any event no matter the sport, the beauty pageant, the Oscars … I am a Brazilian.

“I respect him but go…,” said Neymar who used abusive words at the end of his sentence.
