PARIS: Mauro Icardi led Paris Saint-Germain just one point short of Ligue 1 leaders Lille earlier this morning with a late-game winner to give them a 3-2 win over Saint-Etienne as Monaco and Lyon also brightened their hopes of winning the league title.
The defending champions narrowed the gap with Lille who drew 1-1 with Montpellier on Friday thanks to a 95th-minute header by Icardi.
Monaco are just one point in third place after beating Bordeaux 3-0 while Lyon are three points behind Lille in a 2-1 win in Nantes.
At the Parc des Princes, Kylian Mbappe blasted twice to put PSG ahead after the visitors stunned the hosts with an early goal by Denis Bouanga in the 78th minute which received a Miguel Trauco cross.
Romain Hamouma felt he could provide valuable points for Saint-Etienne in the space of two extra minutes when Bouanga’s blocked shot fell in front of him for an easy goal.
However, Icardi, who found Angel Di Maria’s cross, headed in perfectly three minutes later, creating a warm response from PSG players.
“We ourselves bring the team to a standstill. When you lead 2-1 like that you have to defend the advantage you have,” Mbappe said.
“The league title is very important to us. It will be the 10th title for the club and we want to be a part of history.”
