MILAN: Inter Milan were knocked out of the Champions League group stage for the third time in a row just after a goalless draw against Shakhtar Donetsk at the San Siro.

Antonio Conte’s side need to win to advance to the last 16 with Spanish club Real Madrid.

But the Italian club finished the competition at the bottom of the group with just one victory when they recorded a 3-2 victory over Borussia Moenchengladbach last week in addition to a goalless draw in Ukraine.

Real Madrid advanced to the knockout stages as Group B champions after a 2-0 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach with the German club also advancing as second seed.

Inter Milan, who won the last of three Champions League titles in 2010, have failed to advance to the knockout rounds since the 2011-2012 season.

The Ukrainian club, which was also eliminated, finished third in the group and will now play in the Europa League while Inter Milan’s journey ends.

Conte’s squad to become the only team from Italy failed to place in the last 16 with Juventus, Atalanta and Lazio all advancing.
