BERLIN: Robert Lewandowski fulfilled his reputation as FIFA’s best player by scoring twice as European champions Bayern Munich beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1.

The victory also pushed Bayern to the top of the Bundesliga, two points ahead of Leverkusen in second place.

After overcoming Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the FIFA top award last Thursday, Lewandowski scored Bayern’s winning goal in the 93rd minute at BayArena.

“It’s an amazing year, I hope we will continue to play like this by the new year.

“It is good to score goals at the last minute, especially to get an important victory.

“This proves how we always wanted to win such a match,” Lewandowski said.

Lewandowski currently has 20 goals in 18 games in all competitions this season.

Leverkusen, who collected 28 points, matched RB Leipzig’s pointless goal at home against Cologne.
